Conductive Brass Clamp for Sydney Water

A DESIGN SOLUTION SERVICE 

Avoiding danger from underground pipes that may carry electrical current and cause harm to workers was a major concern for Chess' client, Sydney Water. 

A brief was provided for Chess to develop a design concept and prototype for a conductive clamp that would fasten to various pipes sizes and attach to conducting cables which would direct the earth leakage current safely away from underground pipes which are being worked on. 

The design solution needed to be simple to use and functional for the workers to set-up. A series of CAD and 3-D drawings were developed which allowed the concept to be presented to client stakeholders for assessment. 

“We designed a brass clamp that attaches to a variety of pipe sizes. It is connected with a cable which prevents any current flowing through to workers. The innovative clamp design has 'teeth' so it bites into the pipe and creates multiple contact points making it more effective in conducting electricity,” says Emad Yacoub, Project Manager, Chess Engineering. 

The final solution was simple although the job involved clear thinking and a thorough understanding of the client's needs. Maintenance workers can easily strap on the clamp and avoid any safety issues. Brass was used as it's corrosion resistant and can conduct electricity. The prototypes are now being field tested by the client.
